Keeping New Years Resolutions

February 5th, 2007 · No Comments

chess Indeed, it is not easy to keep New Year resolutions.

As Mentor/Life Coach, my first recommendation is to take a mentor to guide you on how to reach your goals, and usually, much more. If you cannot afford one I think that there are some things you could try to do, and hopefully they will help you achieve those things you want.

Before getting to the tips, I would like to note that through the years I’ve noticed that when it comes to decision making, there are three kinds of people:
1. “I wish I would do…” or “I would love to have…” - These people hope things will fall straight into their lap. They usually will not make an active effort to reach those goals.
2. “That’s it! This year I will…” or “Next week I am starting to…” - These people usually start to do what they decided, but somewhere along the way, stop, give up, or don’t find the time anymore. I think many of us fall into this category.
3. “I know and I believe that I will… therefore I am building a schedule” or “I am starting right now… and I am asking a friend to help me reach this goal” - These are the kind of people that truly BELIEVE and feel it in there bones. The thing that they want is going to materialize, and nothing will stop them from getting there.

So what can I offer you? I think that there are a few things you could do. Just know that it will be time consuming, it will involve hard work and perseverance. If you need support, ask a friend, a family member or someone you know that will help you throughout the whole journey.

You could start by writing down exactly what you want. Not “sort of” or “almost” or “more or less”, write it down and make sure it is clear. Try to summarize it into one or two sentences. Read what you wrote every morning and every evening – and believe it when you read it. Read it with intent. Know that this is something you will achieve. Imagine it. See it in your mind, the actual picture!!!

Build a plan with a time table and clear goals. Make sure it is feasible and not over your capabilities, other wise you will not be able to keep up with it for long. Yes, it is okay to change it on the way, according to limitations or possibilities you did not see ahead of time. Just make sure you’re not letting yourself off the hook or adding too much on yourself. You could always ask for an advice or an idea on how to build the plan. Your friends and family would probably like to help you with this. Last, I think perseverance is important. I know it is hard, but if you truly believe and you have a feasible plan – you could keep resolutions and reach your desired goal.

My last suggestion to you is to read Napoleon Hills’ book Think and Grow Rich. It holds all the steps to getting to what you want. Although Hill refers to wealth, I think that the steps that he wrote down could lead to what ever your heart desires.

I suggest that you can get a free PDF copy through the internet NOW (there’re some links in my post about the book). This book, if you read it thoroughly and even a few time, could really help you reach what you want.

What do you think? What helps you keeping your New Year’s resolutions? What kind of decision-making person are you?

Yours,

Opher
