Fortune Magazine vs. Jack Welch

November 27th, 2006 · 2 Comments

I would like to start with a little confession - I am a big fan of Jack Welch. I think he is one the greatest leaders of our time and reading his books is a fascinating lesson for me.

Seven years after naming Welch as the “Manager of the Century”, Fortune Magazine is changing its tone. Betsy Morris wrote an intriguing article at July’s issue, going against Welch’s winning rules.

I recommend you reading it - you will find some new perspectives for management. I believe, for example, that PQ (Passion Quota) is one the most critical skill that we should develop and seek for (along with IQ and EQ). This motivation gives the winning edge, and it’s crucial in today’s challenges.

I am convinced that there is still a place for Welch’s rules, but it’s a great opportunity to take a look and think (inside). I am sure that every one of you holds some paradigms about management. Check them once in a while and write comments. Doing an objective and frequent “self check” is essential for keeping up and success. Combined with an organized documentation, it becomes a powerful tool. Try it now!

Did Welch’s rules indeed become old?
What are your management rules and paradigms? Are they still valid?

Yours,
Opher.
